Jn 19:28, 30, Lk 24:46; Ps 69:21; 31:5
Introduction:
- “Are we finished yet?” is a question that we have all asked or been ask.
- Answering that question requires a certain amount of subjectivity. This is a challenge because being there at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s might not be when we pull into the driveway, Instead it might be when we are gathered around the table or for little children they snuggle on Grandma’s or Grandpa’s lap.
With that in mind, John prefaced two of the three statements that we will consider today, with context, “After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture.” (Jn 19:28. It is natural that ask, “How did Jesus know that all was now finished?” There is no question that as the Son of God, God, Jesus has supernatural knowledge. While that is true, Luke answers our question. The curtain of the temple was torn is two, from the top to the bottom. – Matt 27:51; Lk 23:45. This indicated that the way into God’s presence was open to all through a new and living way – Heb 10:19-22.
Knowing that all was NOW finished, Jesus uttered two words and one brief statement.
1. A confession of distress - “I thirst” – Jn 19:28.
- Timeline and increased suffering.
- Had refused wine mixed with gall/myrrh (a narcotic) – Matt 27:34; Mk 15:23.
- To fulfill Scripture – Ps 69:12
2. A declaration of triumph - “It is finished.” – Jn 19:30.
- With the tearing of the veil, God the Father said, “It is finished.” Jesus’ shout echoed that.
- A shout – Matt 27:50; Mk 15:37
- Work of redemption accomplished/sin atoned for – Heb 9:12; 10:12
- Satan defeated and powerless – Heb 2:14; 1 Pet 1:18-20; 1Jn 3:8.
- 4God’s righteous law fulfilled – Rom 3:25; Heb 2:17; 1 Jn 2:2; 4:10.
3. A statement of dependence - “Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit”– Lk 23:46.
- Volunarily surrendered His life by an act of His sovereign will.
- “but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” – Jn 10:18; 19:30.
“Offered himself without blemish to God.” – Heb 9:14
Remembering what Jesus Christ said as He died in our place, we dare not forget.
1. Forsaken by His God, Christ’s pain was excruciating.
2. By His blood Christ secured an eternal redemption – Heb 9:12
3. Christ’s death and shed blood purifies our conscience from dead works to serve the living God – Heb 10:14/
4. Our lives are not our own.
